Display Cell
The core of a display.
The display cell significantly determines the structure, technology, and customization options. With PM-LCDs and ZBDs, comprehensive customized adjustments are possible – e.g. in shape, dimensions, display contents (symbols, digits, graphics), connection technology, temperature range, and display type (positive/negative).
TFTs (AM-LCD), OLEDs, and E-Paper, on the other hand, have limited adaptability, as they are manufactured by a few large manufacturers in fixed standards. Adjustments to the cell itself can only be achieved with high volumes and a corresponding investment. In return, housings, lighting, interfaces, and other components outside the cell can usually be easily adapted to the customer application.
Quality characteristic
Decisive for the performance, efficiency, and reliability of the module.
While PM-LCDs are widely available in varying qualities, TFT-LCDs and AM-OLEDs usually come from a few large manufacturers. Differences are mainly evident in contrast, viewing angle, temperature, and shock resistance. The appropriate cell is selected based on the application.
Interesting details.
PM-LCDs and ZBDs offer maximum flexibility at low entry costs. With TFT, E-Paper, and AMOLED, individual cells can usually only be realized with great effort and large quantities. ACTRON therefore recommends well-founded advice before making a technology decision.
PM-LCD (Passive Matrix)
Simple cell structure with a large degree of design freedom (dimensions, shape, image content, connection technology, temperature range, polarizer, viewing angle, mode). Low one-off costs and low minimum order quantities make customized designs economically attractive.
ZBD
Bistable further development of PM-LCDs with the same adaptation options. There are no standard formats – customer-specific design is always required.
TFT-LCD (Active Matrix)
High technological effort, expensive tools, and large minimum quantities. Customer-specific designs are only possible to a limited extent. ACTRON recommends standard formats with multi-source availability to avoid obsolescence risks.
E-Paper
Structure is also based on TFT substrates. Adjustments are expensive and only realistic for very large quantities. Available formats are based on major customers in the e-reader and ESL market.
OLED + PMOLED
Can be customized, but high quantities (30K–40K) are required. Small adjustments (color, polarizer) are also possible with smaller quantities.
AMOLED
As with TFT-LCDs, hardly individually adaptable; the market is determined by consumer products. Only large volumes are economical.
